March 2006 - 5 days of fishing
Posted by Ken Wilson on Sunday, 19-Mar-2006 at 00:08:33
Mark, my brother-in-law, and I just spent 5 days of fishing with Osa Sport fishing from May 10-15. Kay set up the entire trip which included layovers in San Jose and lodging at the Lookout Inn (a great inn located a short 10-15 minute plane ride on the Pacific Ocean side of the Osa peninsula but you can easily stay in Port Jimenez where Osa Sport Fishing (OSF) is located). The captain of the boat, also named Mark, has decades of experience and is extremely knowledgeable about all sorts of ocean fishing including of course the big fish available in the waters around the Osa Peninsula. His crew included LC (who learned about deep sea fishing in the Florida Keys and in trips to the Osa and is in his first full season with OSF) and Juan, a Costa Rican who is amazing with the fish and is learning even more under the guidance of Mark. The entire crew was first rate and made the experience all the more wonderful.

We hoped to catch some fish but we also understand that fishing doesn't necessarily mean catching. Well, we were more than delighted and the trip was simply outstanding.

Day 1: we caught 3 species of tuna including yellowfin and fed a group of 13 people back at the Lookout Inn! Oh yeah and my brother-in-law landed a 100 pound sailfish!

Day 2: we caught 4 Dorado (mahi mahi), one was 45 lbs and another 37 lbs and we again fed about 13 people at the Lookout Inn (they are still eating the Dorado at the Inn!). Oh and we caught 4 more sailfish and missed another 3!

Day 3: We went for the big guy...MARLIN! It ended up being a day of just fishing! Missed a Dorado and 3 sailfish and Juan caught a red snapper and a small jack tuna. The spectacular sight of the day was a line of dolphin/porpoises that streteched for 1/4-1/2 mile with thousands of them heading someplace. There was a continuous barage of acrobatics of young and old dolphins that SeaWorld can never match! But darn no Marlin.

Day 4: I fished with my wife. It was a slow morning that exploded into an after lunch extravaganza of 3 sailfish being hooked at the same time! So much for my wife not getting involved in the fishing!

Day 5: My Mark and his wife fished. They caught 4 sailfish and in the last hour and a half a 300+ lb Marlin decided it was time to give Mark the experience of his life time. It took everything that he and Juan had to hold on when the "strike" was set!

All in all a simple outstanding 5 days of fishing with Osa Sport Fishing (including at least 3 yellowfin tuna, 4 dorado, a dozen sailfish, and a marlin)! It was a once in a life time trip and we'd go back!

Ooops the dates were March 10-15 not May 10-15, 2006.
