shoddy work by Alabama Reel Repair
Posted by angry customer on Monday, 02-Feb-2004 at 19:26:01
I sent Alabama Reel Repair a Mitchell 300 I'd been given for my birthday in 1957. It was quiet and turned freely. It has two problems: the bail tripper in the baffle plate didn't quite clear bail release lever, so it went "ting" very softly on every revolution; and the bushing the crank goes through was worn. In addition, it needed to have the old grease clean out and replaced.

ARR sent it back with a new baffle place and side cover. Also, I think, a new pinion gear. The pinion gear meshed poorly with the head, and the reel was suddenly very noisy. Oh, yes, the reel had the same old grease in it.

I also sent them a Mitchell 308 that needed to have its old grease removed and replaced. ARR degreased it, sort of, and returned it dry. I've lubed it myself.

I complained about the 300, was told to send it back and promised it would be made right. So I sent it back. Then ARR said the head was bad and couldn't be fixed. After being prodded several times, they sent my reel back. It is missing screws, noisier than before, and too stiff to use.

Alabama Reel Repair does shoddy work, charges for work not done, and doesn't stand behind what they do. I regret I went near them. If you want your reel ruined and returned with the news that "They're all like that," send it to Alabama Reel Repair.

Having had four different brands of casting reels serviced for parts and major cleaning by Alabama Reel Repair, I am very satisified with the choice to do so. The service is cost effective and on time.
