These outboards are very reliable and are typically used every day in salt and fresh water such as: The Gulf coast states, Atlantic and Caribbean waters. There are no limitation to which body of water they can be used in, as long as they are washed off to ride salts or acidic residue off them. Its imperative to follow the owners manual and heed their advice. Honda,Yamaha, Suzuki, Johnson, Mercury and Tohatsu, recommend washing their outboard with fresh water to prevent corrosion when done using their outboard. In my opinion that is just plain comen sense.
Lack of experience and maintenance should not impugn nor blemish the integrity of these small outboards.

Despite the information contained on the Island Hopper and St. Pete dealership websites, this motor is NOT SUITABLE for saltwater applications. I have had mine for one year as a dinghy motor and all of the fasterners are rusted, the gas tank leaks and the mount saddle broke. It is probably fine for lakes and ponds but not for saltwater applications.

Here are the rest of the photos......... the GPS listed the speed at 4.7 mph.
I know now that we did the correct thing by switching. You should be able to see a million of these motors to people who use those two person bass buggies. I can imagine any one wanting to drag around a battery when they could have this.

Sam Daniels is the best Tech/Customer service person that I have ever talked to. I have been in sales & customer service for 33 years. Have had big boats, chartered, crewed. Bait hooks, net fish, and always the famous “clean the boat” after every one leaves. Thanks for your help, and now all I have to do is start my new motor.

Just received my 4 stroke Island hopper outboard.
No issues, started right up after adding the oil according to the procedures. Very easy to get going. I will keep everyone posted on how it works in the future. Its my second motor for trolling.

Mine came with no gaskets on the carbutator, and leaked fuel. Called the company and they were not much help. Will try making my own gaskets and trying the motor again this year. The 45 degree angle of the prop to drive shaft is ridiculus, and ineffecient. I like the concept of the weed wacker witha prop because it is very lightweight, so I can store it aboard my 13' sailing skiff as emergency propulsion when weather gets choppy and I need to get back quick.

So you got a brand new defective engine and you are saying that the company refused to send you a replacement? Where did you buy it?

I bought a 2 horse power island hopper early summer last year for my 8.8 dinghy to get to my sail boat which is moored about 2000 feet from the municipal dock and it works good so far.
